Elia’s Researcher Arc

Overview

Stories & continuity

Elia’s Researcher Arc →

Established biography and a flexible story plan, including an introductory Chapter 1 brief. No finished prose chapters. Levels follow earned experience; 42 chapters is not a fixed structure.

Artwork depicts the marked, level-10 field-researcher era independently of the selected build level.

Character overview

A cheerful Harengon scholar follows a suppressed question beyond her academy and emerges permanently half black, half white. Her thoughts wander; her records do not. Eldritch magic becomes a research method—not a corruption story.

Personality

Traits
Bright, exuberant, highly social and exceptionally organized. A liked junior researcher and teaching assistant before her dismissal.
Ideals
Knowledge must be recoverable, traceable and preserved. Attribution matters for future researchers, not fame.
Bonds
The academy as a former community; students, notebooks, institutional contacts and specialist collaborators.
Flaws
Curiosity crosses sensible boundaries; assumes goodwill; initially inexperienced in fieldwork. Rationalizes Friends as harmless or necessary.
Mannerisms
Bouncy walk, bounding run, expressive ears; goes abruptly still when danger registers. A conversation can turn into a seminar.
Fears
A mild dislike of heights; flying is not her preferred solution.
Motivations
Understand the mark, recover forgotten knowledge, preserve usable findings, and keep learning.
Goals
Grow from “I need to know” to “I need to know, and I need six specialists.” Finish one research project—not her curiosity.
Boundaries
Will not sacrifice innocents for research. Kindness is genuine but not a universal heroic obligation.

Visual dossier

Species

Before
All-black hair and ears before the ritual
After

Clothing
Practical expedition clothes, boots, satchel, notebooks, harmonica and dagger; no conventional armour

Warlock effects should be impossible black, not conventional purple or tentacles
Artwork
Provisional cinematic candidate, depicting the level-10 era. Definitive image identification remains open; illustrated skin contrast is subtler than the written description.

ELIA VERIN — CHARACTER
IDENTITY
Name
Elia Verin
Aliases
None established.
Established title/epithet
None established. Former students may informally treat her as "Professor Verin," though she was not actually a professor.
Species/lineage
Harengon, visually interpreted as a human-looking bunny-girl rather than a fully rabbit-headed rabbit-folk. Uses 2024 compatibility treatment for older species material.
Age
Young adult at campaign/story start; exact age not established.
Pronouns
Not explicitly established in a formal field; conversation consistently uses she/her.
Background
Custom 2024 Academy Researcher.
Occupation
Initially junior researcher/research assistant and teaching assistant at a Bardic academic institution. Later independent/contracted field researcher working with multiple institutions and expeditions.
Alignment
Chaotic Neutral.
World/continuity
Unnamed original continuity developed in this conversation.
Current circumstances at end of planned build
Mature independent researcher, Bard 10 / Great Old One Warlock 10, central GOO research project resolved as far as a mortal mind can resolve it; still actively pursuing new knowledge.
CORE CONCEPT

Elia is a cheerful, highly organized, socially gifted Harengon scholar whose curiosity leads her from a Bardic academy into forbidden research. A ritual/source marks her body exactly half black/half white and sets her on a lifelong research question. Her Bard levels represent broad scholarship, communication, institutions, collaboration, and learning about everything else; her Warlock levels represent deepening study of the specific alien phenomenon that marked her. The intended endpoint is literally half Bard / half Warlock: Bard 10 / Warlock 10.

The defining contrast is that Elia looks ominously marked and studies disturbing mind/eldritch magic, but is herself bright, exuberant, delighted by learning, and not brooding. She is not divided into a good half and evil half. The split is not a corruption meter. She is one person.

PERSONALITY
  • Happy-go-lucky, bright, exuberant, joyous, enthusiastic about learning.
  • Exceptionally organized despite an outwardly spontaneous, bouncy demeanor.
  • Very social, including by Bardic-college standards.
  • Likes students, lectures, discussions, old texts, research tangents, strange questions, field discoveries, and anything interesting enough to become a lead.
  • Her thoughts wander; her records do not.
  • Pack, notes, samples, provenance, dates, indexes, and cross-references are meticulous.
  • Easily sidetracked in lectures by interesting questions; may spend twenty minutes on a tangent unrelated to an exam because it is genuinely interesting.
  • Curiosity is a vulnerability, not an all-consuming obsession. Learning is fun.
  • Chaotic: does not accept institutional or moral taboo as sufficient reason to stop asking a question; judges situations herself.
  • Neutral morality: kind/decent, but does not organize her life around moral duty. Would rescue people in immediate danger because she is decent; would not sacrifice innocents for research; distant suffering can matter without becoming her personal obligation.
  • Ethical blind spot around Friends: tends to rationalize it as harmless/necessary; this foreshadows later GOO mind-influence magic.
  • Sentimental about Inflict Wounds as an early proof she could learn outside Bardic tradition; intends to keep it even when obsolete.
  • No meaningful desire for fame. The research topic is interesting; Elia is not, in her own view.
  • Does not particularly want the identity of "adventurer"; adventuring is an available research methodology.
  • By later life, she cannot imagine returning to ordinary academic employment. She remains an academic, but as an independent field researcher.
  • Mature lesson: young Elia thinks "I need to know"; experienced Elia thinks "I need to know, and I need six specialists."

Ideals/values

  • Knowledge should be recoverable, traceable, and preserved for future researchers.
  • Attribution and provenance matter because future researchers need the source trail, not because she wants credit.
  • Interesting questions deserve pursuit, but experience teaches her to pursue them with better preparation and collaborators.

Bonds

  • The academy matters because it was her community, not merely a job.
  • Students and former students matter; she is remembered as a liked, useful teacher/TA.
  • Her notebooks and research record are central to her identity and legacy.
  • The question/source that marked her remains the central research problem until the final Warlock levels.
  • Institutions and specialist colleagues gradually become a professional network/home-away-from-home.

Flaws/weaknesses

  • Curiosity can override sensible institutional boundaries.
  • Initially poor at practical fieldwork relative to her academic skill.
  • Has a tendency to assume goodwill; later Insight Expertise reflects becoming more accurate rather than cynical.
  • Mild dislike/fear of heights; flying is not her preferred solution.
  • Manipulative social magic can feel too easy to her until later reflection.

Mannerisms/habits

  • Slight bounce in ordinary walking; may nearly skip when pleased.
  • Runs by bounding more than human-style running.
  • Ears orient expressively toward sounds/conversations.
  • When danger registers, her bouncy movement can stop abruptly and she becomes still/attentive before bounding away.
  • Carries and constantly updates notebooks.
  • Often speaks as if the party has accidentally become a seminar audience.
  • Harmonica is her practical instrument.

Fears

  • Mild dislike of heights is established. No other explicit fear is established.

Motivations/goals

  • Understand what marked her and why.
  • Recover lost, hidden, suppressed, or forgotten knowledge generally.
  • Preserve findings in usable form for others.
  • Continue following interesting questions after the central GOO project is resolved.

Boundaries

  • Will not sacrifice innocents for research.
  • Kindness is genuine but not framed as heroic obligation.

Humour

  • Often comes from cheerful understatement, practical reactions to absurd magic, and the contrast between ominous circumstances and her matter-of-fact curiosity.
VOICE

Speech pattern: Social, conversational, academically articulate without being stiff; capable of enthusiastic tangents; more interested than dramatic.
Characteristic expressions / established or proposed quotations:
- "Oh." — established proposed reaction to discovering her transformed reflection the morning after the ritual.
- "This is really interesting." — recurring attitude/example, not yet written as canonical scene dialogue.
- "Anyway, it’s really interesting." — representative lecture-tangent line; proposed example.
- "You just gotta see what I found!" — proposed line when unexpectedly returning to the old academy via Teleportation Circle.
- "Huh." — established intended reaction to the final revelation that the ritual/puzzle worked as intended.
- "Alright, Mr. Devil. Shall we get this interview started?" — established epilogue concept line, not yet written in prose.
- "I still have Misty Step." — representative safety-plan joke/example, not written scene dialogue.

APPEARANCE

General: Human-looking bunny-girl Harengon; humanoid woman with rabbit ears, fluffy button tail, and bunny physiology/movement.
Pre-mark appearance: All-black hair/ears is established in concept; exact pre-mark skin/eye details beyond the later split are not fully specified.
Post-mark split:
- One side: black hair, black rabbit ear, paler/normal skin, warm amber/gold eye.
- Other side: white hair, white rabbit ear, darker skin, red eye.
- Tail: ordinary fluffy Harengon button tail, split half black/half white.
- Split is permanent and represents the mark; it is not a corruption tracker or changing class-percentage indicator.
Height: Not established.
Body type: Not established in text beyond youthful/physically buoyant; images depict a slim young woman, but this is visual-source observation, not locked text.
Scars: None established.
Clothing: By level 10, practical field-research clothing, used expedition gear, practical boots, research satchel, notebooks, harmonica, and utilitarian dagger. No conventional armour; Armor of Shadows provides magical protection. Definitive visual intent: youthful/approachable, delightful normally, serious when needed.
Colour palette: Strong black/white split; practical earth/dark fieldwear with warm burgundy/maroon accents appears in accessible images, but exact wardrobe colours are not explicitly locked in text.
Movement: Constant rabbit physiology; slight bounce, bounding run, expressive ears, abrupt stillness when alerted. Even older/high-level Elia remains buoyant rather than solemn/imposing.
Alternate outfits/forms: None established.

SIGNATURE DETAILS
  • Meticulous notebooks, field journals, indexes, provenance records, condensed symbolic shorthand, references to older volumes.
  • Example mature note style: "V-12c → cf. R4/38–41, not AV2 interpretation; same radial structure as H-7? Check transcription. Original rubbing FJ IX, p.73."
  • Older notebooks are stored among trusted institutions/storage/friends because she cannot carry all of them; select important early volumes travel with her.
  • The academy-era notebook with the old Teleportation Circle sigil survives because it contains her earliest notes on the forbidden question.
  • Harmonica: small, durable, pocketable, practical instrument.
  • Dagger: utilitarian rather than central combat identity.
  • Warlock magic aesthetic: impossible black, alien rather than shadowy/purple/tentacled/hellish.
  • Bard magic acts upon the world; Warlock magic "edits" it.
  • Repelling Blast is narrated as position/world being edited rather than physical impact, while retaining normal mechanical push.
  • Misty Step: the world briefly loses agreement about where she is, then settles elsewhere.
  • Mind Sliver: thoughts contain something that was not there.
  • Fear: target receives just enough perception/comprehension of "it" that the primitive response is RUN.
  • Expedition philosophy develops toward bringing specialists and connecting them rather than manipulating cooperation.

Narrative: After becoming a fully mature broad researcher, Elia deliberately returns to the original GOO problem for a final sustained investigation. Dream and Arcane Eye improve existing research/communication methods. Contact Patron finally allows direct questions to the source. Five questions are nowhere near enough for Elia. · "Why?" -> "To tempt the right mind." · "Why me?" -> "You have the right kind of mind." · "What do you want?" -> "Knowledge." · These are concept examples, not written canonical scene dialogue.

Minor Illusion. · Eldritch Hex; Hex becomes always prepared and modifies saves as discussed. · Source conflict: Contact Other Plane is already always prepared from Warlock 9; ordinary preparation choice requires reconciliation.

Narrative: Culmination/revelation. Elia understands that the ritual did not malfunction; the puzzle/mark was intentionally structured to cultivate the researcher she became. It did not need to puppet her; it understood what question would hold her attention. Ultimate GOO motive remains incomprehensible. Her own life/relationships remain genuinely hers. Intended reaction: "Huh." The central project is complete; the notebook is not.

Development plan

  • Grow from “I need to know” to “I need to know, and I need six specialists.” Finish one research project—not her curiosity.

  • Thought Shield at Warlock 10: thoughts unreadable unless allowed, Psychic resistance, psychic damage reflection, per discussion; verify exact official wording.
ELDRITCH INVOCATIONS

1. Armor of Shadows
2. Repelling Blast (Eldritch Blast)
3. Eldritch Mind
4. Agonizing Blast (Eldritch Blast)
5. Pact of the Tome
6. Gaze of Two Minds
7. Visions of Distant Realms (Arcane Eye at will)
No new invocation at Warlock 10 in the recorded plan.

Gaze of Two Minds notes from discussion

  • Bonus action + touch willing creature; perceive through its senses; subsequent bonus actions maintain.
  • Can continue at distance on same plane, and while target is within 60 ft Elia may cast as if in her own or target's space, per discussed 2024 wording.
  • Gets target special senses.
  • Competes for bonus action with Bardic Inspiration/Healing Word.
  • Touch-spell-from-ally interaction was treated as a table interpretation: ally must physically touch target for Elia to cast a touch spell from that space. This is explicitly not settled RAW.
SPELLCASTING

Primary spellcasting ability for Bard, Warlock, and Magic Initiate (Cleric): Charisma.
Final CHA: 20.
Spell attack bonus: Not explicitly recorded as a final number; do not infer here.
Spell save DC: Not explicitly recorded as a final number; do not infer here.

FINAL / INTENDED SPELL REPERTOIRE BY SPELL LEVEL
Important
This list combines ordinary Bard preparations, Lore Magical Discoveries, Warlock preparations, GOO always-prepared spells, Magic Initiate, and Tome access. Exact final ordinary Bard prepared-count bookkeeping was conversationally audited but should be checked against official rules before play. Major Image was explicitly dropped from the final direction; illusion was judged non-central.

1st level

Bard / ordinary or early Bard access

- Comprehend Languages
- Identify
- Charm Person was an early Bard spell but is replaced at Bard 9 by Rary's Telepathic Bond.
- Cure Wounds was originally prepared; later discussions considered replacing it but final explicit replacement chosen for Bard 10 was Aid -> Commune, so Cure Wounds remains unless a later correction is made. NOTE: Earlier assistant mistakenly stated Cure Wounds had been removed for Speak with Plants; user corrected that Speak with Plants fills a missing slot, so that replacement is superseded.
Warlock:
- Bane
- Armor of Agathys
GOO always prepared:
- Dissonant Whispers
- Tasha's Hideous Laughter
Magic Initiate:
- Inflict Wounds

2nd level

Bard

- Healing Word
- Aid was prepared earlier but is explicitly replaced at Bard 10 by Commune.
- Lesser Restoration
Warlock:
- Misty Step
- Suggestion
GOO always prepared:
- Detect Thoughts
- Phantasmal Force

3rd level

Bard

- Leomund's Tiny Hut
- Speak with Plants (fills the missing Bard 5 preparation slot at character level 8; no replacement required)
- Mass Healing Word
Lore Magical Discoveries:
- Revivify
- Phantom Steed
Warlock:
- Remove Curse
- Fear
GOO always prepared:
- Clairvoyance
- Hunger of Hadar
Major Image: considered and briefly proposed for the missing Bard 5 slot, then explicitly deprioritized/dropped because illusion is not central and Speak with Plants better establishes the wilderness/nature research direction.

4th level

Bard

- Freedom of Movement
- Dimension Door
Warlock:
- Charm Monster
- Banishment
GOO always prepared:
- Confusion
- Summon Aberration

5th level

Bard / late Bard

- Teleportation Circle
- Legend Lore
- Rary's Telepathic Bond (replaces Charm Person at Bard 9)
- Commune with Nature (Bard 10 Magical Secrets new preparation; non-Bard/non-Warlock source)
- Commune (Bard 10 Magical Secrets replacement for Aid; non-Bard/non-Warlock source)
Warlock:
- Dream
- Contact Other Plane (at Warlock 10, using the preparation freed when Hex becomes always prepared via Eldritch Hex)
GOO always prepared:
- Modify Memory
- Telekinesis

W9: Modify Memory, Telekinesis

SPELL REPLACEMENTS — FINAL EXPLICIT DECISIONS

- Bard 9 / character 17: Charm Person -> Rary's Telepathic Bond.
Narrative: "I don't need to manipulate people anymore. I'll connect instead." Telepathic Bond represents willing collaboration after years of increasingly invasive mind magic.
- Bard 10 / character 18: Aid -> Commune.
Narrative: broadening what counts as a source; divine knowledge becomes interviewable.
- Warlock 10: Hex becomes always prepared via Eldritch Hex, and Contact Other Plane occupies the freed normal Warlock preparation.
- Speak with Plants does NOT replace Cure Wounds; user explicitly corrected this. It fills the extra Bard 5 preparation discovered in the audit.

SPELLS / FEATURES WITH SPECIAL NARRATIVE ROLE
  • Inflict Wounds: sentimental first non-Bard/Cleric-study spell; intentionally kept.
  • Speak with Plants: practical anti-getting-lost / field-navigation research tool; establishes the theme that information can reside in the environment, later culminating in Commune with Nature.
  • Tiny Hut: practical independent-fieldwork shelter.
  • Phantom Steed: long-distance expedition logistics.
  • Teleportation Circle: institutional network and mature collaboration; not random return-to-site teleportation.
  • Legend Lore: research magic that provides leads rather than replacing research.
  • Rary's Telepathic Bond: willing expedition-team connection; philosophical replacement for Charm Person.
  • Commune: consult divine sources.
  • Commune with Nature: consult the landscape/region itself.
  • Dream: long-distance same-plane researcher communication/interviews.
  • Contact Patron: direct interview of the source.
  • Contact Other Plane: generalizes that methodology to other extraplanar entities.
  • Prestidigitation: deliberately mundane final Bard cantrip; she was preoccupied with more exotic questions.
DEFENCES / RESISTANCES / CONCENTRATION
  • Armor of Shadows / Mage Armor for everyday defence.
  • Armor of Agathys for defensive buffer/retaliation.
  • Resilient (Con) for Constitution saves and concentration resilience.
  • Eldritch Mind for advantage on concentration saves, per discussion.
  • Thought Shield at W10 gives Psychic resistance and mind-reading protection/reflection as discussed.
  • Positioning/escape tools: Rabbit Hop, Repelling Blast, Misty Step, Dimension Door, Freedom of Movement, Banishment, summon, Gaze.
EQUIPMENT / POSSESSIONS

Established

- Harmonica.
- Research satchel.
- Extensive notebooks/field journals.
- Calligrapher's supplies via background.
- Utilitarian dagger.
- Practical field clothing/boots at later levels.
- Old academy notebook containing earliest forbidden-source notes and a copied Teleportation Circle sigil in the margin.
Magic items: None established.
Attunement: Not established.
Consumables: Not established.
Currency: Not established.
Armour: Conventional armour not intended; Armor of Shadows used.

COMBAT ROLE / TACTICS

Primary role: Back-line support/control.
Bard side: buffs, healing, protection, utility, Bardic Inspiration, ally-facing support.
Warlock side: reliable damage, debuffs, control, forced movement, psychic/mind manipulation, enemy-facing pressure.
Fallback: Eldritch Blast with Agonizing + Repelling Blast.
Typical survival philosophy: avoid being adjacent to danger rather than tanking it; use distance, positioning, Mage Armor, Armor of Agathys, Rabbit Hop, Repelling Blast, Misty Step, Dimension Door, Freedom of Movement, summon, Gaze.
Concentration is a major limiting resource. Summon Aberration, Hex/Bane/Fear/Banishment and other concentration effects compete.

Summon Aberration + Gaze

  • Beholderkin: ranged scouting/remote observation.
  • Slaad: durable bodyguard/meat shield/regeneration role.
  • Mind Flayer form: less central.
  • Gaze can turn a willing ally/summon into a forward observation/spell-origin point under the discussed rules.
  • Gaze uses bonus action upkeep and competes with Bardic Inspiration/Healing Word.
  • Arcane Eye at W9 reduces the need to spend Summon Aberration on mundane scouting.
SOCIAL MECHANICAL IDENTITY

Final CHA 20.
Persuasion Expertise.
At high level, a +17 Persuasion bonus was discussed using CHA 20 and PB +6; Guidance can add 1d4 when applicable. Preserve as recorded; verify exact proficiency math if needed.
Persuasion is not mind control; impossible requests remain impossible.
Bard makes Elia more convincing; Warlock increasingly makes targets easier to influence.
The final Telepathic Bond replacement intentionally shifts her mature philosophy from manipulation toward willing connection.

KNOWN RULES / ACCURACY CAVEATS
  • Gaze touch-spell interaction is explicitly a table interpretation, not settled RAW.
  • Exact 2024 Bard prepared-spell count and Bardic Inspiration scaling should be checked from official rules before play; earlier conversation contained conflicting recollections before later audit.
  • Exact wording for Spell Sniper, Countercharm, Observant, Resilient, Pact of the Tome, Gaze of Two Minds, Visions of Distant Realms, Contact Patron, Eldritch Hex, Thought Shield, and GOO spell list should be verified.
  • An earlier playtest/incorrect reference to Evard's Black Tentacles was explicitly corrected to the published GOO progression using Confusion/Summon Aberration.
  • Do not label the build "optimal" or fully rules-certified without that verification.

ELIA VERIN — LEVEL PROGRESSION
STATUS KEY

ESTABLISHED = explicitly accepted/current in this conversation.
PLANNED = intended future progression/story beat but not yet played/written.
SUPERSEDED = earlier route later replaced.
UNRESOLVED = detail still open.

CURRENT BUILD PHILOSOPHY

The level order is chronological and story-first. Abilities should follow events and lessons. Early levels can come comparatively quickly because Elia is learning fundamentals in an educational/research environment. Later levels must require substantially more effort, larger expeditions, sustained bodies of work, or major breakthroughs. A level is the result of what happened, not a convenience that appears before the event that needs it.

This is the latest accepted sequence. It supersedes the earlier late sequence B9/W9/W10/B10.

LEVEL 1 — Bard 1 — ESTABLISHED
Build: B1
Story era: Academy Elia, before the forbidden question disrupts her life.
Features/spells:
- Bard starting class.
- Cantrips: Dancing Lights, Friends.
- Bard preparations: Comprehend Languages, Identify, Cure Wounds, Charm Person.
- Background Magic Initiate (Cleric): Guidance, Thaumaturgy, Inflict Wounds.
Narrative: Promising junior researcher/TA, happy in academic life, history/religion focus, highly organized and social.

LEVEL 2 — Bard 2 — ESTABLISHED
Build: B2
Features/spells:
- Healing Word.
- Expertise: Arcana, Investigation.
Narrative: Deeper academic competence; legitimate research and early discrepancies can begin to accumulate, but story chapter 1 should remain purely introductory.

LEVEL 3 — Warlock 1 — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED STORY EVENT
Build: B2/W1
Features/spells:
- Eldritch Blast, Mage Hand.
- Bane, Armor of Agathys.
Narrative: Follows dismissal and the ritual/mark event. Warlock ability is not a bargain scene; it is Elia studying/reproducing what happened.

LEVEL 4 — Warlock 2 — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B2/W2
Spells/features:
- Hex.
- Invocations: Armor of Shadows, Repelling Blast, Eldritch Mind.
Narrative: First sustained attempts to understand the alien mechanics of the mark/source.

LEVEL 5 — Bard 3 (Lore) — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B3/W2
Features:
- College of Lore.
- Expertise: Persuasion, Religion.
- Aid.
Narrative: Early field research/adventuring teaches her to keep others functional and apply her academic skills outside the academy.

LEVEL 6 — Bard 4 — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B4/W2
Features:
- Spell Sniper; CHA 17 -> 18.
- Vicious Mockery.
- Lesser Restoration.
Narrative: Range, positioning, and practical expedition hazards become real concerns.

LEVEL 7 — Warlock 3 (Great Old One) — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B4/W3
Features/spells:
- Great Old One patron mechanics.
- Misty Step.
- GOO spells begin: Dissonant Whispers, Tasha's Hideous Laughter, Detect Thoughts, Phantasmal Force.
Narrative: Elia recognizes a coherent mind/alien pattern rather than isolated magical side effects. Misty Step follows practical need to stop standing next to dangerous discoveries.

LEVEL 8 — Bard 5 — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B5/W3
Features/spells:
- Leomund's Tiny Hut.
- Speak with Plants. This fills the previously missed extra Bard 5 preparation; no replacement is used.
- Bardic Inspiration / Font of Inspiration development per official table, exact wording verify.
Narrative: Early independent-field-research era. Tiny Hut = safe shelter. Speak with Plants = anti-getting-lost / environmental-source technique for old roads, overgrown ruins, changed landscapes. This is the first clear step toward later Commune with Nature.
Major Image: considered for this missing slot but explicitly dropped as less central.

LEVEL 9 — Warlock 4 — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B5/W4
Features:
- ASI: CHA 18 -> 20.
- Mind Sliver.
- Suggestion.
Narrative: Research into the mark increasingly reveals direct mental influence.

LEVEL 10 — Warlock 5 — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B5/W5
Features:
- Agonizing Blast.
- Remove Curse.
- Pact of the Tome.
- Tome cantrips: Message, Mending, Spare the Dying.
- Tome rituals: Detect Magic, Ceremony.
Narrative: First literal 5/5 half-and-half class milestone; definitive experienced-but-delightful field-researcher visual belongs here. Elia now has a coherent personal research tradition around the phenomenon.

LEVEL 11 — Bard 6 (Lore) — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B6/W5
Features/spells:
- Mass Healing Word.
- Lore Magical Discoveries: Revivify, Phantom Steed.
Narrative: Broader perspective and team/expedition maturity. Phantom Steed solves travel logistics; Revivify represents learning the cost of fieldwork with others.

LEVEL 12 — Warlock 6 — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B6/W6
Features/spells:
- Clairvoyant Combatant.
- Fear.
Narrative: Direct/instinctive psychic influence; Fear is framed as exposing a target to just enough of "it" to trigger RUN, not Elia personally becoming frightening.

LEVEL 13 — Warlock 7 — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B6/W7
Features/spells:
- Pact slots reach 4th level.
- GOO: Confusion, Summon Aberration.
- Charm Monster.
- Invocation: Gaze of Two Minds.
Narrative: Major research-method breakthrough. Elia can observe/cast through another creature's position under the discussed rules and use aberrant spirits as forward scouts/bodyguards.

LEVEL 14 — Warlock 8 — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B6/W8
Features:
- Resilient (Con); CON 12 -> 13; Constitution save proficiency.
- Banishment.
Narrative: Independent survival and concentration discipline after dangerous field methods prove fragile.

LEVEL 15 — Bard 7 — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B7/W8
Features/spells:
- Countercharm.
- Freedom of Movement.
Narrative: Years of field hazards broaden practical Bardic expertise.

LEVEL 16 — Bard 8 — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B8/W8
Features:
- Observant; WIS 10 -> 11.
- Perception proficiency + Expertise as established in conversation.
- Dimension Door.
Narrative: Veteran solo/independent researcher. She is now much better at noticing trouble before entering it; Dimension Door remains the emergency extraction solution. This level intentionally stays in the solo-travel era.

LEVEL 17 — Bard 9 — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B9/W8
Features:
- Expertise: Insight, Survival.
- Teleportation Circle.
- Legend Lore.
- Bard replacement: Charm Person -> Rary's Telepathic Bond.
Narrative: Mature connected researcher. Insight = more accurate evaluation of people/institutions without becoming cynical. Survival = years of field navigation, fewer wrong turns. Teleportation Circle = institutional network. Legend Lore = broad research leads. Telepathic Bond = willing collaboration replacing early magical manipulation.
Known circle sequences: old academy (copied illicitly years earlier in notebook margin) and newer institution; exact names unresolved.

LEVEL 18 — Bard 10 — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B10/W8
Features:
- Prestidigitation as final Bard cantrip; deliberately mundane because she was preoccupied.
- Magical Secrets expansion.
- New preparation: Commune with Nature.
- Replacement: Aid -> Commune.
Narrative: Elia expands the very definition of a source. Speak with Plants has matured into consulting the landscape; divine knowledge is another interview channel. This is not a religious conversion or nature identity.
Bardic Inspiration die at this level: earlier discussion had conflicting recollections; later planning treated Bard 10 as d10. Verify official table.

LEVEL 19 — Warlock 9 — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B10/W9
Features/spells:
- Pact slots become 5th level.
- GOO: Modify Memory, Telekinesis.
- Contact Patron.
- New Warlock spell: Dream.
- Invocation: Visions of Distant Realms (Arcane Eye at will).
Proposed answer pattern:
"Why?" -> "To tempt the right mind."
"Why me?" -> "You have the right kind of mind."
"What do you want?" -> "Knowledge."
These are concept examples, not written canonical scene dialogue.

LEVEL 20 — Warlock 10 — ESTABLISHED/PLANNED
Build: B10/W10
Features:
- Minor Illusion.
- Eldritch Hex; Hex becomes always prepared and modifies saves as discussed.
- Thought Shield.
- Contact Other Plane takes the ordinary preparation slot freed by Hex becoming always prepared.

EPILOGUE — PLANNED, NO LEVEL CHANGE

Years later, older but still buoyant Elia steps through a portal into a devil's domain with notebook and pen. Intended line: "Alright, Mr. Devil. Shall we get this interview started?" She is there because it knows something, not necessarily to fight it.

SUPERSEDED LATE-LEVEL ROUTE
Earlier sequence
character 17 Bard 9, 18 Warlock 9, 19 Warlock 10, 20 Bard 10.
Status
SUPERSEDED by the latest explicit decision to use Bard 9 -> Bard 10 -> Warlock 9 -> Warlock 10. Reason: keeps Observant/Teleportation/connected-research era before the final GOO push; allows Commune/Commune with Nature to become mature research methods used during the final investigation.
UNRESOLVED PROGRESSION DETAILS
  • Exact narrative expedition/event that earns each individual level will be worked out while writing.
  • Exact equipment changes by level are not established.
  • Exact timing of some ordinary Bard preparation acquisitions beyond the named milestones should be rechecked against official prepared-count progression before a final character-sheet import.

Compatibility
Official backward-compatibility rules may be used for older options where permitted. When a 2024 replacement exists, use the 2024 version where applicable.

Cosmetic reflavouring
Extensive narrative reflavouring of Harengon appearance and GOO/Warlock magic. Mechanical effects remain intended to use official rules.
Rules verification status
This build was developed conversationally. Exact wording/counts for every feature were not exhaustively re-verified before export. Preserve the recorded choices and consult current official rules before play if precision is required.

CLASS / SUBCLASS FEATURES

Bard

  • Bardic Inspiration; exact die scaling was inconsistent in earlier discussion. Later audit treated Bard 10 as d10; verify current official Bard table before play.
  • Expertise at Bard 2 and Bard 9 as recorded above.
  • Font of Inspiration at Bard 5 / short-rest recovery discussed; exact wording verify.
  • College of Lore at Bard 3.
  • Lore Magical Discoveries at Bard 6: Revivify and Phantom Steed, treated as additional always-prepared spells rather than ordinary prepared-count usage.
  • Countercharm at Bard 7.
  • Magical Secrets at Bard 10: final intended choices involve Commune and Commune with Nature via Cleric/Druid access; exact 2024 preparation/replacement wording verify.

Warlock

  • Great Old One patron selected at Warlock 3 under 2024 structure.
  • Pact Magic.
  • Invocations listed below.
  • Clairvoyant Combatant at Warlock 6; exact wording not transcribed.
  • Contact Patron at Warlock 9: can use Contact Other Plane to contact patron once per Long Rest without expending a slot and automatically succeeds on the dangerous save, per discussion; verify exact official wording.
  • Eldritch Hex at Warlock 10: Hex always prepared; chosen ability also imposes disadvantage on saves with that ability, per discussion; verify exact official wording.
  • Thought Shield at Warlock 10: thoughts unreadable unless allowed, Psychic resistance, psychic damage reflection, per discussion; verify exact official wording.

Warlock:
- Bane

GOO always prepared:

Magic Initiate:

Warlock:

GOO always prepared:

3rd level

Bard

- Leomund's Tiny Hut
- Speak with Plants (fills the missing Bard 5 preparation slot at character level 8; no replacement required)
- Mass Healing Word
Lore Magical Discoveries:
- Revivify
- Phantom Steed
Warlock:
- Remove Curse
- Fear
GOO always prepared:
- Clairvoyance
- Hunger of Hadar
Major Image: considered and briefly proposed for the missing Bard 5 slot, then explicitly deprioritized/dropped because illusion is not central and Speak with Plants better establishes the wilderness/nature research direction.

- Commune (Bard 10 Magical Secrets replacement for Aid; non-Bard/non-Warlock source)
Warlock:

SPELL REPLACEMENTS — FINAL EXPLICIT DECISIONS

- Bard 9 / character 17: Charm Person -> Rary's Telepathic Bond.
Narrative: "I don't need to manipulate people anymore. I'll connect instead." Telepathic Bond represents willing collaboration after years of increasingly invasive mind magic.
- Bard 10 / character 18: Aid -> Commune.
Narrative: broadening what counts as a source; divine knowledge becomes interviewable.
- Warlock 10: Hex becomes always prepared via Eldritch Hex, and Contact Other Plane occupies the freed normal Warlock preparation.
- Speak with Plants does NOT replace Cure Wounds; user explicitly corrected this. It fills the extra Bard 5 preparation discovered in the audit.

SPELLS / FEATURES WITH SPECIAL NARRATIVE ROLE
  • Inflict Wounds: sentimental first non-Bard/Cleric-study spell; intentionally kept.
  • Speak with Plants: practical anti-getting-lost / field-navigation research tool; establishes the theme that information can reside in the environment, later culminating in Commune with Nature.
  • Tiny Hut: practical independent-fieldwork shelter.
  • Phantom Steed: long-distance expedition logistics.
  • Teleportation Circle: institutional network and mature collaboration; not random return-to-site teleportation.
  • Legend Lore: research magic that provides leads rather than replacing research.
  • Rary's Telepathic Bond: willing expedition-team connection; philosophical replacement for Charm Person.
  • Commune: consult divine sources.
  • Commune with Nature: consult the landscape/region itself.
  • Dream: long-distance same-plane researcher communication/interviews.
  • Contact Patron: direct interview of the source.
  • Contact Other Plane: generalizes that methodology to other extraplanar entities.
  • Prestidigitation: deliberately mundane final Bard cantrip; she was preoccupied with more exotic questions.
DEFENCES / RESISTANCES / CONCENTRATION
  • Armor of Shadows / Mage Armor for everyday defence.
  • Armor of Agathys for defensive buffer/retaliation.
  • Resilient (Con) for Constitution saves and concentration resilience.
  • Eldritch Mind for advantage on concentration saves, per discussion.
  • Thought Shield at W10 gives Psychic resistance and mind-reading protection/reflection as discussed.
  • Positioning/escape tools: Rabbit Hop, Repelling Blast, Misty Step, Dimension Door, Freedom of Movement, Banishment, summon, Gaze.
EQUIPMENT / POSSESSIONS

Established

- Harmonica.
- Research satchel.
- Extensive notebooks/field journals.
- Calligrapher's supplies via background.
- Utilitarian dagger.
- Practical field clothing/boots at later levels.
- Old academy notebook containing earliest forbidden-source notes and a copied Teleportation Circle sigil in the margin.
Magic items: None established.
Attunement: Not established.
Consumables: Not established.
Currency: Not established.
Armour: Conventional armour not intended; Armor of Shadows used.

COMBAT ROLE / TACTICS

Primary role: Back-line support/control.
Bard side: buffs, healing, protection, utility, Bardic Inspiration, ally-facing support.
Warlock side: reliable damage, debuffs, control, forced movement, psychic/mind manipulation, enemy-facing pressure.
Fallback: Eldritch Blast with Agonizing + Repelling Blast.
Typical survival philosophy: avoid being adjacent to danger rather than tanking it; use distance, positioning, Mage Armor, Armor of Agathys, Rabbit Hop, Repelling Blast, Misty Step, Dimension Door, Freedom of Movement, summon, Gaze.
Concentration is a major limiting resource. Summon Aberration, Hex/Bane/Fear/Banishment and other concentration effects compete.

Summon Aberration + Gaze

  • Beholderkin: ranged scouting/remote observation.
  • Slaad: durable bodyguard/meat shield/regeneration role.
  • Mind Flayer form: less central.
  • Gaze can turn a willing ally/summon into a forward observation/spell-origin point under the discussed rules.
  • Gaze uses bonus action upkeep and competes with Bardic Inspiration/Healing Word.
  • Arcane Eye at W9 reduces the need to spend Summon Aberration on mundane scouting.
SOCIAL MECHANICAL IDENTITY

Final CHA 20.
Persuasion Expertise.
At high level, a +17 Persuasion bonus was discussed using CHA 20 and PB +6; Guidance can add 1d4 when applicable. Preserve as recorded; verify exact proficiency math if needed.
Persuasion is not mind control; impossible requests remain impossible.
Bard makes Elia more convincing; Warlock increasingly makes targets easier to influence.
The final Telepathic Bond replacement intentionally shifts her mature philosophy from manipulation toward willing connection.

KNOWN RULES / ACCURACY CAVEATS
  • Gaze touch-spell interaction is explicitly a table interpretation, not settled RAW.
  • Exact 2024 Bard prepared-spell count and Bardic Inspiration scaling should be checked from official rules before play; earlier conversation contained conflicting recollections before later audit.
  • Exact wording for Spell Sniper, Countercharm, Observant, Resilient, Pact of the Tome, Gaze of Two Minds, Visions of Distant Realms, Contact Patron, Eldritch Hex, Thought Shield, and GOO spell list should be verified.
  • An earlier playtest/incorrect reference to Evard's Black Tentacles was explicitly corrected to the published GOO progression using Confusion/Summon Aberration.
  • Do not label the build "optimal" or fully rules-certified without that verification.

Story

Stories & continuity

Elia’s Researcher Arc →

Established biography and a flexible story plan, including an introductory Chapter 1 brief. No finished prose chapters. Levels follow earned experience; 42 chapters is not a fixed structure.

History, relationships & development

HISTORY

Academy phase

Elia is trained at a Bardic academic institution rather than a performing-arts school. The institution teaches history, religion, magical theory, rhetoric, lore, old texts, and performance as part of Bardic scholarship. Elia specializes formally in History and Religion. After completing her education she is retained for roughly six months as a junior researcher/research assistant and TA. Her work includes archive/catalogue duties, helping senior faculty, tutoring, study sessions, and occasional lectures. Before the forbidden-research incident she is considered promising, personable, useful, and employable; no one treats her as an obvious problem case.

Forbidden question and dismissal

During legitimate research, Elia notices a discrepancy suggesting deliberate suppression: possible missing citations, removed pages, quotations of a source the academy claims does not exist, mismatched expedition records, or similar evidence. The exact trigger is not yet fixed. She follows the thread immediately. Academy restrictions are intended to be defensible and include dangerous compositions, true names, ritual instructions, cursed texts, entity records, hazardous histories, and similar material. Elia pushes restricted access/asks the wrong questions/follows leads beyond institutional comfort. She is eventually dismissed. The academy's action is not intended to be cartoonishly malicious; it can still be defensible even if her later research proves important. By dismissal she has enough of a lead to continue independently.

The mark

Shortly after leaving and before the campaign/story proper, Elia follows the lead alone to an old ritual site in the woods. She interacts with or completes something. The ritual works as intended and claims/marks her. She is too focused on the discovery and notes to notice her appearance immediately, camps/sleeps, then sees the split transformation in a stream reflection the next morning. Outward reaction is intended as "Oh." Internally she immediately begins testing hypotheses: curse, transmutation, persistence, boundaries, eye changes, etc. She instinctively thinks of academy resources/people, then remembers she no longer has access. She is concerned and fascinated.

Independent career

Adventuring becomes the best available research methodology. Elia follows leads across regions and between institutions. Travel is not random: each destination follows a research tree that can look absurd to outsiders because they do not understand the subject. Cheap/light leads she checks herself; many are dead ends, mistranslations, unrelated ruins, or false connections. Enough discoveries are real that she builds a professional reputation. She develops practical field skills over years, including using magic such as Tiny Hut and Speak with Plants for field survival/navigation. She works with recurring friends/colleagues and institutions but does not require a fixed party. Institutions may contact her with discoveries because "Verin, we uncovered something you may want to see" is an effective way to summon her.

Institutional reconnection

By high level, institutions respect her results even if the old academy still considers the original dismissal justified. She has a newer institution she repeatedly works with, a professional home-away-from-home rather than an employer. Teleportation Circle represents a mature institutional network. Elia likely copied the old academy's circle sigil years earlier into the margin of an academy notebook with a note such as "Academy TC sigil — restricted. Don’t use. Interesting geometry." Years later, at an extraordinary site, she can dig out that old notebook and appear at the academy unexpectedly to bring them a major discovery. This is a proposed planned scene, not written prose.

Final GOO investigation

The late build order is Bard 9 -> Bard 10 -> Warlock 9 -> Warlock 10. This means Elia first becomes a mature, connected, broadly capable researcher: Legend Lore, Teleportation Circle, Telepathic Bond, Commune, Commune with Nature, Insight/Survival Expertise. Only then does she deliberately turn those mature methods back toward the original GOO question. Warlock 9-10 represent a final, sustained research push, not patron corruption. Contact Patron allows direct questioning; Contact Other Plane generalizes the method. The final revelation is that the ritual/puzzle did not malfunction: it was designed to create/cultivate precisely the kind of researcher Elia became. The GOO may want some lost knowledge recovered, but its ultimate motives remain beyond Elia's conceptual framework. Elia's own choices and relationships remain real; the source understood her and placed the right question rather than puppeting her. Her intended reaction to the revelation is simply "Huh." Then she moves on to the next interesting question.

Future/legacy

Elia likely never retires. Older Elia may rely more on Dream, Arcane Eye, correspondence, and younger field researchers, but she continues pursuing knowledge. Her notebooks/reports/transcriptions/correspondence could become a "Verin corpus." She does not seek fame; the value is that centuries later someone can know something because she recorded it. Future scholars may be frustrated by references to lost/missing notebooks, accidentally creating "lost Elia knowledge."

RELATIONSHIPS
Named people
None established.
Academy
Major formative institution/community. Relationship shifts from belonging -> strained boundaries -> dismissal -> long-term professional distance -> potential later reconnection/collaboration.
Students/former students
Elia was liked by students. Proposed reunion dynamic: former student recognizes her by voice/behavior/tangent rather than changed appearance; may call her "Professor Verin," which she could correct because she was not actually a professor.
Senior faculty/Professor X
Specific names not established. Elia may instinctively think of academy resources or a professor after the mark; exact person is unresolved.
Newer institution
Exists as a planned recurring professional home-away-from-home; unnamed.
Great Old One/source
Not a conventional patron-employer relationship. It reached her through the ritual/mark; Warlock progression is primarily Elia learning to understand/reproduce the phenomenon. Ultimate motive remains unknowable. It may have deliberately cultivated a broad, curious, socially capable researcher to recover knowledge.
Companions/expedition specialists
No named characters yet. Mature Elia increasingly brings specialists instead of handling major discoveries alone.

STORY SUMMARY

Elia begins as a happy, promising young scholar and TA at a Bardic academic institution. While conducting legitimate research, she notices evidence that material has been suppressed. Her curiosity leads her beyond institutional boundaries and eventually to dismissal. She follows the surviving lead alone to an old ritual site, where a ritual/source marks half her body white/dark/red while the other half remains black/pale/gold. She treats the transformation as a research problem.

Her career develops from inexperienced ex-academic into independent field researcher. Bard levels represent broad academic growth, travel, collaboration, institutions, communication, and learning from increasingly diverse sources. Warlock levels represent her focused attempt to understand the specific alien phenomenon that marked her. She becomes exactly half Bard / half Warlock at level 10 for the first time, then ultimately at level 20.

By late career she reconnects professionally with institutions, learns to bring specialists rather than work alone, replaces Charm Person with Rary's Telepathic Bond, learns Legend Lore, Commune, and Commune with Nature, and turns those mature methods back toward the original GOO question. The final Warlock levels reveal that the ritual worked as intended and appears to have been designed to cultivate precisely this kind of broad, persistent researcher. Ultimate motive remains beyond her. She reacts with "Huh" and continues her life.

APPEARANCE/BUILD BY ERA
1. Academy Elia
Bard 1-2, pre-mark, all-black hair/ears, ordinary academic life.
2. Marked early Elia
Bard 2 / Warlock 1-2, newly split black/white appearance.
3. Early field researcher
Bard 3-4 / Warlock 2-3, learning practical survival.
4. Independent researcher / level 10
Bard 5 / Warlock 5, first literal half-and-half class milestone; accessible visual design material likely belongs here.
5. Research-at-distance era
Bard 6 / Warlock 6-8, summon/Gaze/psychic methods.
6. Veteran field researcher
Bard 7-8 / Warlock 8, Observant/Dimension Door/field competence.
7. Connected master researcher
Bard 9-10 / Warlock 8, Teleportation Circle, Legend Lore, Telepathic Bond, Commune/Commune with Nature.
8. Final GOO investigation
Bard 10 / Warlock 9-10.
9. Epilogue
years later, exact age/build beyond level 20 not established.
RELATIONSHIPS WITHIN STORY
  • Bardic academy: formative home/community -> conflict/dismissal -> later potential collaborator.
  • Students/former students: positive; proposed reunion scene exists but is unwritten.
  • Newer institution: recurring professional base, unnamed.
  • Great Old One/source: research subject and source of mark, not conventional boss/patron relationship.
  • Expedition specialists/companions: increasingly important by late career, but none named yet.
DIFFERENCES FROM GENERAL PROFILE

None; this is the general/current Elia profile.

OTHER CONTINUITIES / ALTERNATE STORIES

No unrelated Elia continuity is established in the accessible conversation. Do not merge Miri/Jane/Eira project materials with Elia.

Rules review & calculated values

Structured progression, selected core class features and deterministic snapshot calculations; not a full build-legality certification. Checked 2026-09-29.

ELIA VERIN — UPDATE NOTES
Export date
2026-09-29
Scope
Elia Verin and the story continuity developed in this conversation.
PREVIOUS EXPORT

No previous Elia export package is available in this conversation context. This export does not claim knowledge of the user's local Character Pholio website or its current contents.

LATEST IDENTIFIABLE DECISIONS
  • Final intended class split remains Lore Bard 10 / Great Old One Warlock 10.
  • Latest accepted late-level order is Bard 9 -> Bard 10 -> Warlock 9 -> Warlock 10 at character levels 17-20.
  • Speak with Plants fills the missing Bard 5 preparation at character level 8; it does not replace Cure Wounds.
  • Major Image was dropped from the current intended spell list because illusion is not central and the wilderness/nature information direction is more important.
  • Bard 9 includes Teleportation Circle + Legend Lore, with Charm Person replaced by Rary's Telepathic Bond.
  • Bard 10 adds Commune with Nature and replaces Aid with Commune.
  • The mature thematic shift is explicit: "I don't need to manipulate people anymore. I'll connect instead."
  • The final Warlock levels now happen after Elia has become a mature connected researcher, so her final GOO investigation uses the broad methods she has already learned.
  • Chapter 1 should be purely introductory: Elia, city, academy, routine, likes/dislikes, subtle magic, no rush into forbidden extracurricular research.
  • Story development will proceed organically; do not lock the previously proposed 42-chapter count.
  • Later levels require greater effort to earn, and abilities must follow events/lessons rather than conveniently preceding them.
EXPLICITLY SUPERSEDED MATERIAL
  • Earlier late-level sequence ending with Bard 10 after Warlock 10.
  • Major Image as the Bard 5 missing preparation.
  • Cure Wounds -> Speak with Plants replacement proposal.
  • Any framing in which Bard 10 is necessarily the final "next subject" level; final level is now Warlock 10 and resolves the original question.
RULES / BOOKKEEPING NOTES
  • The build is conceptually complete, but a final official 2024 class-table verification is still recommended for Bard prepared counts, Bardic Inspiration scaling, and exact feature wording before importing into a strict rules engine.
  • No silent corrections were made in this export. Known discrepancies are preserved and flagged in ALTERNATIVES_AND_CONFLICTS.txt.
FILES / IMAGES
  • Three accessible Elia-like images were included under characters/elia-verin/images/.
  • Their exact current/definitive status is uncertain because generic filenames do not preserve the conversation's generation-order identity.
  • Unrelated Miri/Jane/Eira source files were intentionally excluded.
