Elia’s Researcher Arc

A cheerful Harengon scholar follows a suppressed question beyond her academy and emerges permanently half black, half white. Her thoughts wander; her records do not. Eldritch magic becomes a research method—not a corruption story.

Established biography and a flexible story plan, including an introductory Chapter 1 brief. No finished prose chapters. Levels follow earned experience; 42 chapters is not a fixed structure.

ELIA VERIN STORY — FULL STORY

STATUS

No complete narrative prose, chapter scene, song, or other finished story text has yet been written in this conversation.

The material developed so far is planning/outlining only. It is intentionally NOT rewritten into prose here.

CURRENT CHAPTER 1 BRIEF — OUTLINE, NOT PROSE

User's latest explicit direction

  • First chapter should be purely introductory.
  • Introduce Elia, the city, the academy, her daily life, likes and dislikes, and subtle uses of magic.
  • Do not explicitly state every spell she uses.
  • Do not rush into extracurricular/forbidden activities.
  • Establish ordinary Elia before the plot changes her life.

Assistant planning notes accepted as direction but not yet written as story

  • The city should be shown as lived-in background through Elia's routine rather than a lore dump.
  • The academy should feel like familiar workplace/home territory.
  • Show Elia as bright, sociable, extremely organized, liked by students, prone to interesting tangents, and physically Harengon in movement/ears.
  • Magic should be mundane and integrated into daily life rather than announced by spell names.
  • Chapter 1 should establish that Elia is happy in academic life and would plausibly have stayed there if nothing happened.
  • At most, a tiny research discrepancy could be noted without ominous framing; no dramatic cliffhanger is required.

PROPOSED/PLANNED DIALOGUE FRAGMENTS FROM THE WIDER STORY

These are not yet canonical scene prose and should not be treated as written chapters

  • "Oh." — intended reaction when Elia sees her post-ritual reflection.
  • "You just gotta see what I found!" — proposed later old-academy Teleportation Circle return.
  • "Huh." — intended reaction to the final research revelation.
  • "Alright, Mr. Devil. Shall we get this interview started?" — intended epilogue line.

No transitions or missing scenes have been invented for this export.

ELIA VERIN STORY — STORY GUIDE
TITLE

Not established.

CONTINUITY

Unnamed main Elia Verin continuity.

PREMISE

A cheerful, highly organized young Harengon scholar follows a suppressed academic question beyond the boundaries of her institution and is marked by an alien ritual/source. Rather than becoming a brooding chosen one or resisting corruption, she treats the impossible event as the research problem of her life. The story follows her development from promising academic to independent field researcher, collaborator, master scholar, and ultimately the person capable of directly investigating the source that marked her.

SETTING
World name
Not established.
Primary city
Not established.
Bardic academy
Not established by name. It is an academic Bardic institution teaching history, religion, magical theory, rhetoric, lore, performance, old texts, and related scholarship.
Later institutions/regions
Not yet named.
TONE
  • Wonder, curiosity, academic adventure, field research, quiet humour.
  • Ominous/alien magic contrasted with Elia's delight and practical curiosity.
  • Not a corruption tragedy.
  • Not a heroic-duty narrative.
  • Institutions can be restrictive for defensible reasons rather than being caricatured villains.
  • Growth comes from accumulated experience, research, relationships, and methodology.
THEMES
  • Curiosity as strength and vulnerability.
  • Knowledge, provenance, and preservation.
  • Independence versus isolation.
  • Manipulation versus willing connection.
  • Expanding what counts as a source of knowledge: books -> people -> environment -> minds -> legends -> institutions -> gods/nature -> patron -> other planes.
  • Identity without purification: Elia is not trying to remove or reject her Warlock half.
  • The question that changes a life without invalidating the choices made afterward.
  • Expertise earned through field practice.
CHRONOLOGY / ERAS

The exact chapter count is NOT locked. A previous proposal suggested roughly 42 chapters + epilogue, but the user explicitly chose to work it out as the story develops. Use the eras below as flexible structural guidance.

ERA 1 — Ordinary Academy Life (Bard 1-2)
Purpose: establish who Elia is before plot disruption and make the academy feel like a genuine home/community.
Chapter 1 is explicitly planned as purely introductory:
- Introduce Elia, city, academy, daily routine, likes/dislikes, students/colleagues, ordinary work.
- Show subtle uses of magic without naming every spell or treating spellcasting as a checklist.
- Do not rush into extracurricular/forbidden activity.
- Do not end with a dramatic suspicious-book cliffhanger.
- At most, a tiny mundane research discrepancy can be noted for later, but even that is optional.
- Establish that Elia is happy and would plausibly have stayed in academia for decades if nothing happened.

ERA 2 — The Forbidden Question / Dismissal (late Bard 2)
Elia encounters a research discrepancy suggesting deliberate suppression. Exact form unresolved. She follows it through legitimate and increasingly strained channels, pushes restricted boundaries, and is dismissed. The academy's reasons should remain defensible.

ERA 3 — Ritual and Mark (Warlock 1-2)
Elia follows the surviving lead alone to an old ritual site in the woods. She completes/interacts with it; the ritual works. She notices the physical split only the next morning in a stream. This creates the central research question.

ERA 4 — Learning Fieldwork (Bard 3-4 / Warlock 3)
Elia discovers the gap between academic competence and practical field competence. She learns positioning, support, recovery, and escape. Misty Step should follow a concrete event where being somewhere else becomes the obvious lesson.

ERA 5 — Independent Researcher (Bard 5 / Warlock 3-5 / Bard 6)
Adventuring becomes research methodology. Tiny Hut and Speak with Plants arise from practical travel/shelter/navigation problems. Speak with Plants is specifically a "don't get lost / ask the environment" tool, not a nature-spirituality turn. At level 10 she reaches Bard 5 / Warlock 5, the first literal half-and-half class milestone. Bard 6 broadens team support/logistics with Revivify and Phantom Steed.

ERA 6 — Research at a Distance / Deep GOO Methods (Warlock 6-8)
Fear, Summon Aberration, Gaze of Two Minds, Charm Monster, and Banishment represent deeper understanding of alien/mental methods. Gaze + summon changes how she investigates dangerous sites. Resilient (Con) follows the practical need to maintain concentration under threat.

ERA 7 — Veteran Field Researcher (Bard 7-8)
Freedom of Movement, Observant, Perception Expertise, and Dimension Door reflect years of field skill. Elia remains buoyant and curious but is no longer naive about danger. Observant/Dimension Door stay firmly within the solo/independent travel era.

ERA 8 — Connected Researcher (Bard 9-10)
Elia is now established enough to reconnect with institutions as peers/clients rather than return as an employee. Survival/Insight Expertise, Teleportation Circle, Legend Lore, and Rary's Telepathic Bond reflect mature fieldwork and collaboration. Charm Person is explicitly replaced by Telepathic Bond: "I don't need to manipulate people anymore. I'll connect instead." Bard 10 expands source-methodology with Commune and Commune with Nature; Aid is replaced by Commune.

ERA 9 — Final GOO Investigation (Warlock 9-10)
After becoming a fully mature researcher, Elia deliberately turns back to the original question. This is the slowest/highest-effort progression. Dream, Arcane Eye, Contact Patron, Modify Memory, Telekinesis, Contact Other Plane, Thought Shield, and Eldritch Hex arise from a sustained final research campaign. She concludes that the ritual/puzzle worked as intended and cultivated the researcher she became. Ultimate GOO purpose remains alien. Reaction: "Huh."

ERA 10 — Epilogue
Years later, older Elia enters a devil's domain to interview it because it knows something. Intended line: "Alright, Mr. Devil. Shall we get this interview started?"

LEVELING PRINCIPLE
Explicit user instruction
later levels require more effort to earn. Abilities should follow events as previously determined. Do not write scenes where Elia conveniently gains a spell just before a problem that requires it. The problem/experience/research comes first; the level/spell represents what she learned.

ESTABLISHED EVENTS VS UNWRITTEN PLANS

Written prose scenes: None yet.
Established/planned events:
- Academy life and TA/research role.
- Research discrepancy and dismissal.
- Ritual site and half-black/half-white mark.
- Independent field-research career.
- Increasing institutional reputation/reconnection.
- Final GOO research and revelation.
- Devil-interview epilogue concept.
All scene-level execution remains unwritten unless quoted as a proposed line.

OPEN THREADS
  • City, academy, institution, location, and character names.
  • Exact forbidden discrepancy/source.
  • Exact academy dismissal circumstances.
  • Specific expeditions that earn each level.
  • Named recurring companions/colleagues/students/faculty.
  • Exact nature of what the GOO ultimately wants found; should remain incomprehensible or only partly inferable.
  • Exact final chapter count.
SECRETS / PLANNED REVEALS
  • The ritual did not malfunction.
  • The half-mark was intentional.
  • The puzzle/lead appears to have been structured for someone with Elia's particular curiosity/mind.
  • The GOO/source may have wanted a broad, socially capable, endlessly curious knowledge-seeker rather than a pure Warlock servant.
  • Elia's own decisions/relationships remain authentic; the source did not need to overwrite her mind to shape the path.

Decisions, alternatives & inconsistencies

1. FINAL LATE-LEVEL ORDER

CURRENT / EXPLICITLY ACCEPTED

17 Bard 9 -> 18 Bard 10 -> 19 Warlock 9 -> 20 Warlock 10.
Reason: keeps Observant/Teleportation/connected-research material in the independent/connected era; lets Commune/Commune with Nature become mature research methods before the final GOO push; preserves the final Warlock levels as a deliberate last investigation.

SUPERSEDED

17 Bard 9 -> 18 Warlock 9 -> 19 Warlock 10 -> 20 Bard 10.
Earlier rationale: final Bard 10 as "next subject" after GOO project.
Status: superseded by user's explicit preference for B9, B10, W9, W10.

2. SPEAK WITH PLANTS / MAJOR IMAGE

CURRENT

Speak with Plants occupies the missing Bard 5 preparation at character level 8. It is a practical anti-getting-lost / wilderness-source spell and establishes the later nature-information direction.

SUPERSEDED / DROPPED

Major Image was initially selected for the missing Bard 5 slot and later considered for another home. User explicitly decided illusion has not been central and the wilderness/nature direction is more important. Major Image is not part of the current intended final list.

3. CURE WOUNDS -> SPEAK WITH PLANTS

SUPERSEDED ERROR

Assistant proposed Cure Wounds -> Speak with Plants at Bard 6.
User corrected: "No, missing slot."
Current ruling: Speak with Plants fills the Bard 5 missing slot; Cure Wounds is not removed by that decision.

4. BARD 9 REPLACEMENT

CURRENT

Charm Person -> Rary's Telepathic Bond.
Explicit thematic meaning: "I don't need to manipulate people anymore. I'll connect instead."
No unresolved conflict.

5. BARD 10 REPLACEMENT / MAGICAL SECRETS

CURRENT

Aid -> Commune.
New Bard 10 preparation: Commune with Nature.
Both are chosen specifically as non-Bard/non-Warlock Magical Secrets directions and broaden what counts as a source.
No unresolved conflict.

6. LEGEND LORE / TELEPATHIC BOND TIMING

CURRENT

Moved to Bard 9 / character 17 rather than waiting until Bard 10.
Legend Lore is a new Bard 9 preparation; Telepathic Bond is the replacement for Charm Person.

7. DEFINITIVE VISUAL IMAGE

KNOWN

Conversation summary records that two level-10 visual generations were made and the second one was accepted with: "That's her. Delightful but serious when it matters. 🖤🤍"
CONFLICT / UNCERTAINTY:
Three Elia-like images are currently accessible by generic filenames, and the available filesystem metadata does not reliably identify which file corresponds to the accepted "second" image.
Question needed to resolve: Which exported image should be marked primary/definitive?

8. BARD PREPARED-SPELL BOOKKEEPING

CURRENT UNDERSTANDING

Audit found missing ordinary Bard preparations at Bard 5 and Bard 9. Bard 5 missing slot is now Speak with Plants. Bard 9 additions/replacement are Teleportation Circle, Legend Lore, and Charm Person -> Telepathic Bond under the discussed progression.
UNCERTAINTY:
Exact official 2024 prepared-count accounting, Lore extra preparations, and every intermediate ordinary Bard slot should still be verified against the current official Bard table before importing into a rules-enforcing character builder.
Question needed to resolve: None narratively; only rules verification if exact sheet legality is required.

9. BARDIC INSPIRATION DIE SCALING

CONFLICT

Earlier discussion inconsistently placed d10 at Bard 9 versus Bard 10. Later planning treated Bard 10 as d10.
Question needed to resolve: Verify the current official 2024 Bard table before final rules-certified sheet export.

10. GAZE OF TWO MINDS TOUCH-SPELL INTERACTION

CURRENT TABLE INTERPRETATION

If Elia casts a touch spell as though in the Gaze target's space, the ally/target must physically touch the spell target.
STATUS:
Uncertain interpretation, not established RAW.
Question needed to resolve: Table/DM ruling.

11. GOO ULTIMATE MOTIVE

CURRENT

It may have wanted lost knowledge recovered and deliberately cultivated a broad, curious researcher, but "why" should remain beyond Elia's conceptual framework.
ALTERNATIVE DETAILS:
- Ancient/incomplete ritual waiting for someone curious enough.
- Ritual effectively asks "Do you want to know?" and curiosity itself is the bond.
- Half-mark as blueprint of intended 50/50 Bard/Warlock result.
None of these finer explanations has been fixed as literal cosmological fact.
Question needed to resolve: Usually none; preserving ambiguity is preferred.

12. STORY CHAPTER COUNT

PROPOSED

A 42-chapter + epilogue structure was outlined as one possible pacing model.
CURRENT:
User chose to work the story out as it goes and asked only that established level progression and effort scaling be tracked.
Question needed to resolve: Decide chapter count organically during drafting; do not lock to 42 unless user later accepts it.
