The Gentle Company

A deceptively respectable adventuring company forms around three highly destructive, fun-seeking adventurers and the Halfling who quietly points them at the right problem. Their public face says “The Gentle Company.” Their operational reality, according to Nessa, is “Herding Displacers.”

Mercy’s original concept heavily based on The Healer Is the Final Boss — Devilyn’s Bard Tales (publishing channel). Names, character development and builds were developed locally. Channel verified 2026-10-03; image artist unverified.

Fragment 1 / 6

MERCY’S CHALLENGE LOOP

Status: Established concept/scene beat, not a fully written canonical scene.

A bandit challenger issues a public contest meant to prove who is stronger. Mercy steps in. The meaning of the sequence was explicitly refined by the user: this is not merely that she can outlast him; it is “this is how much better I am.” She beats him, spends her own healing resources to restore his ability to continue, and can beat him again.

If he is visibly wavering but still conscious, Mercy can heal him before he drops and make the implication obvious:

“Oh no. Another round.”

The signature current line is:

“We aren’t done.”

The fight ends cleanly if he genuinely surrenders. Unconsciousness by itself is not necessarily a conclusion when Mercy can treat it.

Fragment 2 / 6

BRAKK FINALLY HITS MERCY PROPERLY

Status: Established by user.

In training, Brakk uses a BIG wooden club. At first he is still holding back against the smaller unarmoured healer. Eventually he lands a real hit.

Mercy is thrown into the wall.

For roughly a fraction of a second Brakk is thrown for a loop: he may have broken the healer.

Mercy staggers up, heals herself, smirks, and says:

“Now that was a hit.”

Brakk’s shock lasts only a moment. Then he is overjoyed: he has found a durable training partner.

Fragment 3 / 6

PARTY COMBAT START

Status: Established party shorthand.

Brakk:
“I rage, run in, hit the biggest thing in the room. Very hard. Recklessly!”

Mercy:
“Not without me!”

Zevra’s immediate thought:
“How can I make this worse?”

Nessa is now free to make the most of the opportunity, completely unnoticed.

Fragment 4 / 6

NESSA PULLS THE TRIGGER

Status: Established by user.

Nessa does not merely adapt to the chaos; she aims it. She identifies the threat relevant to the mission and says:

“The big one is that way.”

Brakk/Mercy/Zevra become the launched catastrophe. Nessa goes to do the thing they are actually there for.

Fragment 5 / 6

THE GENTLE COMPANY INTRODUCTION

Status: Established image/interaction, not fully scripted.

Zevra uses her most seductive/polished face and introduces them under the misleadingly reassuring name:

“The Gentle Company.”

Brakk stands very tall.

Mercy looks like a respectable healer.

There is one more member. She is usually not noticed and does not try to be.

Nessa’s own more accurate operational phrase for the party is:

“Herding Displacers.”

Fragment 6 / 6

FIRST PARTY TO CURRENT PARTY

Status: Established outline, unwritten.

Original group:
Wizard + Cleric + Rogue + Brakk.

They acquire Mercy.

Brakk + Mercy becomes “infinity destruction.”

The other three give up/retire from that degree of chaos.

Brakk and Mercy continue, content.

They find equally chaotic teammates: Zevra, who revels in crazy situations and looks for ways to make them worse; and Nessa, an opportunistic Halfling rogue who turns every distraction into mission progress.

No further chronological story was written.

Inside this continuity

Display name
The Gentle Company continuity
Setting/world proper name
Not established.

TONE

  • Chaotic adventure comedy built on competent characters making simple choices very effectively.
  • The party looks tactically irresponsible from the outside but covers core adventuring roles surprisingly well.
  • Violence is energetic/cartoonishly resilient in tone when Mercy can repair the consequences, but the current concept does not frame her as a sadist.
  • Nessa is the objective anchor; the other three are having fun.

THEMES / RECURRING MOTIFS

  • Simplicity mistaken for incompetence.
  • “Support” characters who are far more dangerous than expected.
  • Chaos as a tactical resource.
  • Public branding versus operational reality.
  • Friendship through mutually enabling competence.
  • The laser-pointer metaphor: Nessa aims the destruction rather than stopping it.

LOCATIONS

No named locations are established.
Scene-level generic locations mentioned in illustrative discussion:
- training room/yard with a wall and a big wooden club;
- bandit road/challenge ring context from the song-derived premise;
- generic introduction room/tavern/court-like setting for company branding.
These are not mapped locations.

IMPORTANT OBJECTS

  • Brakk’s greataxe.
  • Brakk’s huge wooden training club.
  • Mercy’s healer’s kit/medical supplies.
  • Nessa’s thieves’ tools.
  • Metaphorical “laser pointer” — not a literal item unless later established.

RELATIONSHIPS

  • Mercy ↔ Brakk: best friends, sparring partners, mutually enabling “infinity destruction.”
  • Nessa → Brakk/Mercy/Zevra: tactical aiming/herding role; she cares about objective completion.
  • Zevra → group: public introducer/brand manager; escalation engine.
  • Brakk/Mercy/Zevra → Nessa: rely on/benefit from her direction even if not framed as formal command hierarchy.

CHRONOLOGY — ESTABLISHED ORDER ONLY

1. Earlier party exists: Wizard + Cleric + Rogue + Brakk.
2. They acquire/recruit Mercy.
3. Brakk and Mercy discover their extreme training compatibility; “infinity destruction” dynamic emerges.
4. Original Wizard/Cleric/Rogue eventually give up/retire/stop adventuring with them. Exact reason and scene not written beyond inability/unwillingness to sustain the chaos.
5. Brakk and Mercy continue together, content.
6. Zevra joins as an equally chaotic teammate who asks how to make situations worse.
7. Nessa joins as an opportunistic Halfling rogue who makes use of every distraction and becomes the objective-focused tactical core.
8. Zevra’s misleading public company name is established as “The Gentle Company.”
9. Nessa’s private accurate phrase becomes “Herding Displacers.”

ESTABLISHED SCENE BEATS

  • Mercy’s bandit challenge: challenge is “this is how much better I am.” She can beat/heal/repeat, spending her own resources to make the opponent capable of another loss. Surrender can end it.
  • Mercy/Brakk first real training hit: big wooden club; Mercy is thrown into wall, staggers up, heals, smirks, says “Now that was a hit.” Brakk is briefly shocked then overjoyed.
  • Party combat trigger: Brakk declares his reckless charge; Mercy says “Not without me!”; Zevra asks how to make it worse; Nessa uses the distraction.
  • Nessa points the laser: “The big one is that way.”
  • Company introduction: Zevra uses her most seductive/polished face; Brakk stands very tall; Mercy reads as a respectable healer; Nessa is the fourth member people often fail to notice.

Open decisions & superseded versions

1. MERCY’S PERSONALITY — SUPERSEDED COLD/SADISTIC DIRECTION

Competing versions

A. Earlier GPT version
cold/clinical healer, possibly Neutral/Lawful Evil, torture-adjacent, resurrection used to continue interrogation/punishment.
B. Current user-refined version
mischievous, battle-loving, neither sadistic nor kind; pain is not the objective; fighting is. She avoids leaving corpses and may heal an opponent so the fight can continue.
Acceptance
Version B explicitly established by user and is current. Version A superseded.
Resolution question
None needed unless user wants to retain any cold/clinical trait separately.

2. MERCY SIGNATURE LINE

Competing versions

A. “You weren’t finished.” — GPT proposed.
B. “We aren’t done.” — user explicitly selected.
Acceptance: B current; A superseded.

3. MERCY NAME

Version
GPT proposed “Mira Vey”; later discussion primarily calls her “Mercy,” and user says “it’s her nickname now.”
Acceptance
Mercy nickname definitely current. Mira Vey was included in a finalized build and never rejected, but was not separately confirmed as legal name.
Precise question
Is “Mira Vey” locked as her legal/birth name, or should current exports use Mercy only until a legal name is chosen?

4. MERCY SUBCLASS TERMINOLOGY

Recorded informal phrase
“Mercy monk,” sometimes “Way of Mercy” in early assistant language.
Rules-verified 2024 name
Warrior of Mercy.
Status
Use Warrior of Mercy mechanically. “Mercy monk” is ordinary descriptive shorthand. 2014 Way of Mercy is not the selected rules edition.

5. MERCY EXACT SKILL ALLOCATION

Recorded target skills
Medicine, Acrobatics, Insight, Perception, Stealth.
Rules sources
Wayfarer fixes Insight/Stealth; Human adds one skill; Monk chooses 2 from its list; Warrior of Mercy adds Insight/Medicine at 3.
Conflict
Final conversation did not specify exactly which source provides which skill, and Perception is not a Monk class option.
Precise question
Which Human Skillful proficiency and which two Monk level-1 skill choices should be selected?

6. BRAKK GIANT ANCESTRY

Proposed
Stone Giant ancestry for durability.
Acceptance
GPT proposed; user did not explicitly confirm.
Precise question
Stone, or another 2024 Goliath ancestry?

7. BRAKK LATER DURABILITY FEATS

Proposed
Tough and/or Constitution increases after Strength reaches 20.
Acceptance
Broad direction only, not exact level selections.
Precise question
Lock Tough at 12, raise CON, or another route?

8. ZEVRA TIEFLING LEGACY

Options under current 2024 rules
Abyssal, Chthonic, Infernal.
Acceptance
No choice made.
Precise question
Which legacy?

9. ZEVRA SPELLS / INVOCATIONS / PACT OPTIONS

Recorded direction
ranged magical artillery, control, Fiend Patron, “make this worse,” fire-friendly visual.
Conflict
No actual spell/invocation list was selected.
Precise question
Build Zevra for pure Eldritch Blast control, fire-heavy Fiend casting, familiar tricks, or another emphasis?

10. NESSA EXPERTISE

Earlier GPT proposal
“Stealth and either Sleight of Hand or Thieves’ Tools, depending on implementation.”
Rules review
2024 Rogue Expertise applies to skill proficiencies; Thieves’ Tools should not be silently treated as Expertise.
Current
Stealth intended; second Expertise is choice required.
Precise question
Sleight of Hand, Perception, Investigation, or another skill?

11. NESSA LEVEL-4 DEXTERITY HALF-FEAT

Recorded direction
a Dexterity-raising feat to reach DEX 18.
Acceptance
no feat named.
Precise question
Which qualifying feat?

12. PARTY NAME

Possible assistant suggestions included The Unsupervised, Controlled Disaster, Herding Displacers, etc.
Current explicit user decision: The Gentle Company, with Zevra using “gentle” as deliberately misleading public branding.
Nessa’s phrase: “Herding Displacers” remains her private/operational description, not the formal company name.

13. ERRONEOUS GENERATED CHARACTER SHEET IMAGE

The assistant generated a full-page “Vaelyn, The Merciful Hand” image immediately after the user’s original Mercy prompt, despite the project instruction not to generate images unless asked. The user explicitly objected and asked for a character build, not images.
Status: Superseded/misgenerated artifact. It is included only because the export instruction requests available images and preservation of conflicts; it is not current canon and should never be used as Mercy’s identity/build source.

14. FOUR-PANEL PARTY IMAGE

Generated after explicit user request and explicitly praised as capturing all four fantastically.
Status: Current accepted visual group reference, subject to normal caveat that text-not-established micro-details in the art are visual observations rather than locked biography.
