STORY GUIDE — UNNAMED MAIN ADVENTURE CONTINUITY
- Canon title
- Not established.
- Technical export folder label
- "unnamed-main-continuity" only; this is not a canon story title.
- Continuity
- Main Isolde/Vaelith continuity from this conversation.
PREMISE
Queen Isolde Vaelith, a young snow-elf ruler with rare Paladin magic, leaves the vast northern nation of Vaelith to personally investigate an impending supernatural threat. She travels without announcing her royal title, joins adventurers whose route/interests overlap with the investigation, and follows the problem across the world. The eventual threat is not something Vaelith can solve by armies, diplomacy, or royal authority alone, forcing Isolde to stand with her companions as an equal.
SETTING
Broader world: Unnamed.
Magic level:
- Magical creatures and innate supernatural traits are real and accepted parts of the world.
- Practical spellcasting is rare.
- Powerful spellcasters are very rare and can be nationally important.
- Permanent magic items are rare treasures rather than routine advancement purchases.
- "Magic exists" does not mean "magic is ubiquitous."
VAELITH
- Enormous northern tundra nation.
- Snow-elf homeland; described as exclusively snow-elf in the user's concept, while also allowing a small number of foreign settlers/visitors in major cities. Exact legal/cultural definition of "exclusive" is unresolved.
- One massive capital.
- One or two other larger cities.
- Hundreds of smaller settlements at every scale.
- Some settlements can be cut off, disappear from contact, or be lost to snow.
- Distances are culturally vast; journeys that outsiders consider major can be treated as ordinary regional travel.
- Not isolated: active trade, visitors, merchants, diplomats, and some permanent outsiders in larger cities.
Climate adaptation
- Snow elves are naturally adapted to extreme cold.
- Mechanically intended Cold Resistance.
- This does not protect them from heat; Isolde becomes uncomfortably warm quickly when traveling south.
- Boreas has an even stronger practical problem in hot regions because he is an ordinary polar bear.
Economy/resources
Signature export: blue steel and high-quality metal goods.
Other discussed exports:
- high-quality ordinary steel/metalwork,
- frostglass/crystal,
- furs/hides,
- bone/ivory crafts,
- preserved northern foods/fish,
- ores/minerals,
- cold-weather textiles/clothing.
Likely imports discussed:
- hardwoods,
- fruit,
- wine,
- spices,
- medicines,
- luxury textiles,
- agricultural products difficult to produce locally.
TONE
- High fantasy with rare practical magic.
- Regal northern aesthetic without turning all royal equipment into magic items.
- Adventure can include light humor around climate, money, travel, and Isolde's sheltered-but-competent upbringing.
- Core arc is earnest: duty, responsibility, leadership, equality, and the limits of political authority in the face of a transnational/supernatural threat.
THEMES
- Duty versus personal agency.
- Leadership as protection rather than control.
- Standing beside people versus standing above them.
- Rare power as responsibility.
- The difference between state authority and personal capability.
- Earned companionship.
- Mundane craftsmanship retaining value in a magical world.
- Home versus the wider world.
CHRONOLOGY
Established order
1. Isolde is born into and trained for the ruling line of Vaelith.
2. Boreas becomes her companion in childhood.
3. Isolde becomes queen unusually young.
4. Her practical Paladin magic exists by the time of the adventure; exact awakening event is unresolved.
5. Evidence of an impending threat appears.
6. She investigates through normal royal means at first (scholars/scouts/records/diplomacy were proposed examples).
7. The trail points beyond Vaelith and beyond what she can efficiently solve as a ruler from the capital.
8. She leaves with personal funds and equipment rather than a major royal expedition.
9. She travels as Isolde without announcing she is queen.
10. She meets/asks to join an adventuring party whose path intersects with her investigation.
11. The investigation becomes campaign-long and world-spanning.
12. The party eventually learns her actual royal identity through a mundane reveal; exact scene unresolved.
13. The final-scale threat cannot be solved by Vaelith as a state.
14. Isolde confronts it beside her companions as an equal.

IMPORTANT OBJECTS
Isolde's blue-steel plate

- Starts as personal equipment, not a magic item.
Isolde's blue-steel longsword
- Mundane at start.
- Becomes brilliantly blue-white when empowered by Paladin abilities.
- Possible future magical imbuement, unresolved.
Boreas's barding
- Mundane quality blue-steel plate at start.
- Coverage/protection can improve at meaningful cost.
- Possible future magical imbuement, unresolved.
Royal magical artifacts
- The conversation established that the crown treasures the few magical artifacts it has.
- No specific artifact names or properties are canonically established.
RELATIONSHIPS
Isolde ↔ Boreas
- Lifelong, reciprocal-feeling bond.
- Not a summoned steed relationship.
Isolde ↔ Party
- Starts as practical cooperation.
- Deepens into friendship/equality.
- Her queenship is concealed by omission, not elaborate false identity.
Isolde ↔ Vaelith
- Duty and love, not rejection.
- The campaign tests the limits of solving every problem through crown authority.
PLOT STRUCTURE
Act/phase labels were not formally established, but the intended progression is
- Local/national signs of a threat.
- Personal investigation outside the kingdom.
- Party formation and travel.
- Growing evidence that the problem crosses borders and categories.
- Identity reveal to the party.
- Escalation into a threat no army/kingdom alone can solve.
- Final confrontation as a party of equals.
ESTABLISHED EVENTS
No prose scenes have been written, so all events above are outline-level established/planned material rather than dramatized scenes.
OPEN THREADS
- Exact threat and root cause.
- What first clue forces Isolde beyond Vaelith.
- Why exactly she inherited so young.
- How her Paladin power first manifested.
- Who governs/administers Vaelith during her absence.
- Exact reveal scene.
- Exact party cast.
- Exact capital and city names.
- Exact rules and culture around royal polar bear bonds.
- Whether Boreas's barding is ever enchanted.
- Whether Isolde's sword or armor is ever enchanted instead.
SECRETS
Only one functional secret is established
- Isolde does not initially tell the party she is the reigning queen.
This is meant to have a mundane reveal later rather than a melodramatic magical reveal.
WRITTEN VS UNWRITTEN
- Written scenes
- None.
- Unwritten plans
- All campaign events in this guide are planning material.
Decisions, alternatives & inconsistencies
1. PALADIN SUBCLASS
- Current
- Oath of Devotion.
- Earlier alternative
- Oath of the Ancients.
- Context
- Ancients was first proposed for an ancient northern covenant / preserving life through winter concept. Later comparison showed Devotion matching Isolde's duty, justice/order, protective leadership, Sacred Weapon, and aura themes more directly.
- Acceptance
- The user explicitly said the Devotion consideration felt like what she would do and later said "Yes, we can use this."
- Status
- Ancients is superseded as the preferred subclass, but remains a meaningful alternate concept.
- Question needed to reopen
- None unless the user wants to revisit subclass identity.
2. BEAST MASTER RANGER VS PALADIN WITH CUSTOM BOREAS
- Current
- Paladin with a custom scaling Boreas companion.
- Alternative
- Beast Master Ranger was mentioned as a fallback if a real bear companion departed too far from normal rules.
- Acceptance
- The character stayed Paladin; user explicitly allowed loose rules for this concept.
- Status
- Beast Master route superseded.
3. BOREAS STARTING BARDING
- Current
- Boreas begins with quality steel/blue-steel plate barding that is genuinely protective and visually exquisite. Coverage can improve later.
- Earlier assistant proposal
- ceremonial/light/partial protection.
- User correction
- "The barding should at least reflect that it is quality steel plate. Maybe coverage can improve later."
- Status
- Earlier "mostly ceremonial/light" framing is superseded.
- Unresolved
- exact starting AC/coverage and later upgrade steps.
- Question
- What mechanical AC/coverage model should Boreas's starting barding use?
4. BOREAS MAGICAL STATUS
- Current
- Boreas is explicitly nonmagical.
- Future possibility
- His existing barding might someday be magically imbued.
- Status
- Bear remains mundane; equipment enchantment is only a possible later event.
- Question
- If rare enchantment becomes available, does Isolde choose Boreas's barding, her sword, armor, or shield?
5. SNOW ELF RULES
- Current direction
- Use High Elf as the chassis and replace a mechanically significant High Elf magical feature with normal Cold Resistance.
- Earlier thought
- Add a subtle magical-resistance-like trait as well.
- Latest user direction
- "Take whatever high elf feature is mechanically significant and replace it with normal cold resistance."
- Status
- Broad/additional Magic Resistance is not current; Cold Resistance swap is current.
- Unresolved
- which exact High Elf feature is replaced and what other High Elf features remain.
- Question
- Which exact High Elf feature should be exchanged for Cold Resistance?
6. SNOW ELF POPULATION / "EXCLUSIVELY" SNOW-ELF NATION
- Established concept
- Vaelith is an exclusively snow-elf tundra nation.
- Also established
- visitors exist, trade exists, and probably a few outsiders have settled in larger cities.
- Potential tension
- "Exclusively snow-elf nation" can mean culturally/ethnically dominant rather than literally zero non-snow-elf residents.
- Status
- Unresolved wording, not necessarily a true contradiction.
- Question
- Is Vaelith legally/culturally a snow-elf homeland with small foreign resident communities, or literally restricted to snow-elf citizenship/settlement outside special enclaves?
7. COUNTRY / DYNASTY NAME
- Current
- Vaelith is accepted for the nation, and "Queen Isolde Vaelith" remains the character name/title.
- User note
- nations and rulers can have the same name.
- Earlier assistant concern
- a different surname/dynastic name might be needed if the nation is Vaelith.
- Status
- That concern is superseded; same-name nation/ruler is allowed.
- Unresolved
- whether "Vaelith" is surname, dynastic name, territorial style, or simply the form used in the character name.
- Question
- What exactly does "Vaelith" denote in Isolde's name?
8. ADVENTURING NAME
- Current
- She generally goes by "Isolde" and does not announce her royal title.
- Alternative
- A shortened family form such as "Vael" was floated by the assistant.
- Acceptance
- Not accepted.
- Status
- Shortened surname is unresolved/non-canon.
- Question
- Does she use only "Isolde," or any surname/alias while traveling?
9. CROWN / CIRCLET
- Current
- She should not wear an obvious royal crown while adventuring.
- Proposed
- A restrained silver/blue-steel circlet or hair ornament could remain part of her dress.
- Acceptance
- Not explicitly confirmed.
- Status
- Unresolved visual detail.
- Question
- Does she wear a non-royal circlet/hair ornament on the road?
10. EYE COLOR / BODY DETAILS
- Proposed
- glacial blue eyes, tall/athletic build.
- Acceptance
- Not separately confirmed.
- Status
- Visually consistent but unresolved.
- Question
- Lock exact eye color, height, and build?
11. SUCCESSION EVENT / AGE
- Established
- Isolde is young and was trained as the future ruler; there is probably a reason she became queen so young.
- Proposed
- an unexpected parental death / early succession.
- Acceptance
- The user agreed there was probably a reason, but no exact event was chosen.
- Status
- Unresolved.
- Question
- Who was the previous ruler, what happened, and how old was Isolde when she inherited?
12. FIRST MANIFESTATION OF PALADIN MAGIC
- Proposed
- she heals a badly injured person as an adolescent, prompting the court to summon scholars/clergy.
- Acceptance
- Not explicitly confirmed.
- Status
- Unresolved.
- Question
- How and when did Isolde first demonstrate Paladin power?
13. CAMPAIGN THREAT
- Established
- an impending threat prompts investigation; the campaign becomes a long search for the root; eventually it is not something Vaelith as a kingdom can solve.
- Proposed examples
- glacier advance, animal migration, impossible freezing, sounds beneath ice, cracked boundary stones, "something is wrong with winter."
- Acceptance
- None of these exact phenomena were locked.
- Status
- Threat details unresolved.
- Question
- What concrete first symptom and ultimate root cause define the campaign threat?
14. MAGIC-ITEM SCARCITY
- Current
- permanent magic items are rare; the crown treasures the few artifacts it has; starting gear is mundane.
- Potential rules tension
- Standard D&D encounter/treasure assumptions may make magic weapons more available than this setting wants.
- Status
- Intentional setting divergence, not an error.
- Question
- How scarce should magic items be by tier, and what mechanical compensation (if any) is needed against creatures assuming magic weapons?
15. STARTING WEALTH / ROYAL PRIVILEGE
- Current
- Isolde starts with plate and high-quality personal gear because she is queen, but leaves with only personal money and nothing extravagant.
- Earlier framing
- broader royal-quality gear/wealth head start.
- User correction
- she would not leave with substantial wealth.
- Status
- substantial traveling wealth is superseded.
- Unresolved
- exact coin amount.
- Question
- What personal starting funds does she carry?
16. STARTING LEVEL
Level 1 was used for the basic build and progression baseline.
No explicit campaign start level was stated.
Status: Unresolved.
Question: Does play actually begin at level 1, level 3 when Devotion comes online, or another level?
17. BOREAS COMPANION MECHANICS
Established concept: real, nonmagical polar bear, lifelong companion, armored, progresses with Isolde, not Beast Master.
Balance goal: useful but not a second full PC.
Status: Major unresolved homebrew system.
Questions:
- How does Boreas act in initiative?
- Does commanding attacks cost Isolde an action/bonus action?
- How do HP, PB, saves, and AC scale?
- Can he attack while serving as a controlled mount?
- How are death, healing, and replacement handled?
18. PALADIN STEED FEATURE
- Current intent
- do not summon a replacement for Boreas; reinterpret/rework the feature to support the existing bond.
- Status
- Homebrew unresolved.
- Question
- What exact benefit replaces the redundant summoned-steed feature?
19. BUILD ABILITY ADVANCEMENT
- Current long-term direction
- CHA 20, probably STR 16, solid CON.
- Exact ASI/feat schedule
- Not established.
- Status
- Unresolved.
- Question
- Which feats/ASIs are chosen at each opportunity?
20. BACKGROUND
- Narratively
- royal/noble heir.
- Mechanically
- exact 2024 background not chosen.
- Status
- Unresolved.
- Question
- Use an official 2024 background, a compatible legacy Noble, or a custom background allowed by the table?
